Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about altitude training at Kaptagat, Kenya. Can't find your answer? Contact us directly.

When is the best time to visit Kaptagat?

Kaptagat has excellent training conditions year-round. The dry seasons (December–March and June–October) are most popular, but the area is suitable for training throughout the year with mild temperatures and consistent conditions at 2,400m altitude.

How long should I train at altitude?

We recommend a minimum of 2 weeks to experience the benefits of altitude training. Most athletes see optimal results with 3–4 weeks. However, even 1 week can provide valuable experience and some adaptation benefits. Special discounts are available for stays longer than 21 nights.

What fitness level do I need?

Our programs cater to all levels from recreational runners to elite athletes. We customise training intensity to match your current fitness level and goals. You should be able to run comfortably for at least 30 minutes.

Do I need special vaccinations?

We recommend consulting with your doctor or a travel clinic before travelling to Kenya. Common recommendations include vaccinations for Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A/B, and Typhoid. Malaria prophylaxis is generally not necessary for Kaptagat due to the high altitude.

What is included in the training packages?

All packages include shared double room accommodation, full board (3 meals per day + free water), airport transfer, gym access, and 2 sports massages per week. Higher packages add excursions, safari, personal coaching, mountain bike use, merchandise, and more. See our packages section for full details.

How do I get to Kaptagat from Nairobi?

The easiest option is a Jambojet flight from Nairobi to Eldoret International Airport, which is just 45 minutes from Kaptagat. We include airport transfer in all our packages. Alternatively, you can take the SGR train from Nairobi to Kisumu and then connect by road.

What is the climate like in Kaptagat?

Kaptagat sits at 2,400m, giving it a cool, temperate climate year-round. Daytime temperatures typically range from 16–24°C and can drop to 8–14°C at night. Light layers are recommended. Rainfall is spread across two seasons: March–May and October–November.

Can I book for a group or team?

Absolutely. We regularly host groups, clubs, and national teams. Group bookings receive special rates and customised training schedules. Contact us to discuss group arrangements and we will tailor a programme to suit your needs.

Is there WiFi and phone signal at the centre?

Yes, free high-speed WiFi is available throughout the facility. Local SIM cards are widely available and affordable for data and calls. We recommend purchasing a Safaricom SIM card on arrival at the airport.

What is the tourist tax?

A 2% tourist tax is added to all room rates. This is a government-regulated charge and applies to accommodation costs. Package prices already account for this — the tourist tax applies to room-only stays booked separately.

Are discounts available for longer stays?

Yes — special discounts are available for guests staying longer than 21 nights. Please contact us to discuss pricing for extended training blocks.
